Presentation Title:
Data Mining Social Media to Provide Actionable Intelligence
Presentation Summary:

Did you know that three out of every four law enforcement professionals are using social media for crime investigation/prevention; that 87% of the time, when social media is used as a probable cause for a search warrant holds up in court; or that 67% believe information obtained via social media can help solve investigations more quickly?  As criminals are looking for new ways to avoid police detection, officers and analysts are constantly looking for new methods of policing – mining data derived from social media offers enhancements to this process.

This training session will detail the new social media paradigm, offering insights from a former law enforcement officer on how data mining can be used in the investigation/analyst process.  Leveraging demonstrations and real-world examples, it will also showcase new capabilities that are available to law enforcement agencies that enable them to unlock the value of big data from social media platforms and discover risks, threats, and gain actionable intelligence.  These new capabilities can help pre-identify criminal activity and target social media posts within specific geographical locations, adding a virtual dimension to traditional public records data to help identify actions before they occur, uncover non-obvious associations, and generate a comprehensive view of an activity for investigative purposes.
